Mice: The best Ways to Eliminate Them From Your Home!

Mice infestations are a common problem across all areas of the UK due to their rapid reproduction rates and being able survive off pretty much anything as a food source. Below we have put together a list of the best methods to use to eliminate mice from your property.

Mice Control Methods

Rodent Proof Your Home – eliminating entry points to your home is a good way to stop a mouse infestation from expanding or even stop them from occurring at all. By eliminating entry points to your property it stops mice from having easy access and can be a good defence against infestations. This task can be quite difficult due to the fact that mice can squeeze through gaps just a quarter of an inch in size! The best way to judge if a hole is big enough for a mouse to fit through is to use a pen, if the pen fits in the space then so could a mouse! Ensure that cracks in the foundation are sealed as well as any openings in walls, including where vents and utility pipes are installed. Corking and steel woo are the best materials to use as plastics wood and rubber are no challenge for a mouse to gnaw through. If there are gaps in windows and doors then weather stripping is best to use to properly seal them.

Use Mouse Traps – If you have an ongoing problem with a mice infestation then the best way to get rid of them is to set mouse traps. Wooden snap traps will do the job for smaller mice infestations, but don't underestimate the scale of the infestation, make sure you lay plenty of traps and maybe try a few different types such as bait traps, glue traps and multiple capture live traps as well as the wooden traps. Place Traps Properly – Traps need to be placed perpendicular to walls with the trigger facing the skirting board. Place traps wherever you see signs of mice such as droppings or streaks on walls and skirting boards. Change the location of the traps every two days as mice are naturally curious so they wont avoid the traps.

Good Sanitation – Although good sanitation will not get rid of a mouse infestation poor sanitation can certainly attract them! Mice are able to survive on 3-4 grams of food per day so just a few crumbs around the house is all they need. Hoover floors and wipe down surfaces to eliminate easy access to food. Keep all rubbish bags in the bin as a plastic bag is no match for the teeth of a mouse to chew through.

What Are Rats?

Signs Of Rats

Rats like to eat sweet corn cobs, various root vegetables such as carrots, potatoes and beetroot and cause cause much damage to crops both when they are growing and in places where they are being stored. You can usually identify rat crop destruction by parallel grooves in the produce where the rats teeth have bitten into the food. Rat’s also leave traces of their nests and tunnels with small entrances in soil around 30-40mm long. Rat droppings are pellet shaped with rounded ends and are roughly around 5mm long and 15mm wide. Adult rats in terms of size are one of the larger rodents and are around 21cm long and have a hairless tail.

Grey Squirrels and the Problems They Cause

Moth Control: Prevention and Treatment

Moth control has become a huge problem for people across Britain this year. As you may have heard the National Trust have been experiencing particular problems this year or in the papers like the Daily Mail where moths are in abundance this year and the damage they are causing to people’s clothes, carpets, rugs and other materials around the home is catastrophic. This is why Kapow Pest Control have put together a few tips on how to prevent moth infestations and how to best deal with an infestation already present. 

Moth Prevention Tips:

Moth prevention should always start with preventing their access into your home as once they are inside they will find a dark place to lay their eggs, usually in wardrobes, cupboards leaving clothes and other materials a prime source of food for the moths and larvae. The best ways to keep moths out of your home are:

Hoover regularly pay close attention to unseen areas such as under furniture, beds and the sofa to try to remove any unhatched moth eggs.

•       Make sure any material being stored for long periods of time, in particular: woolen products; (jumpers, woolen coats etc.), old family clothes etc. are kept in sealed bags or boxes to prevent moths access to lay eggs.  Also check lofts for off-cuts of old wool carpets and rugs! Ideal breeding sites for textile pests.

•         Use Scented moth repellent sachets usually lavender, or cedar products. 

•         Use quality moth monitors that use pheromones to attract the male moth.  This not only monitors activity, but does reduce breeding numbers.

Moth Treatment Tips:

Wasp Control: How To Deal With Wasp Nests

When it comes to wasp control there are two common types of wasps in the UK and it is important to understand the difference between the two before the removal of a wasps nest. 

Solitary Wasp
The solitary wasp is hardly noticed as they are loners and don't cluster together therefore they rarely cause much of a problem to us humans.
They reside in:

• Small nests they build themselves from wood or mud
• Holes abandoned by other insects
• Inside prey. A solitary wasp kills their prey then lays eggs inside the body, once hatched the larvae feed off the body!
• Underground tunnels. This would pose a hazard to us if we decide to walk barefoot in the garden!

Social Wasps
These are the wasps that tend to cause us the most problems with their nests population reaching a staggering 5,000 to 10,000 in the heights of summer! They build nests out of scraps of wood, Paper and cardboard mixed with their saliva to form a substance called cellulose. These nests are commonly found in eaves of the house, attics, walls, roof spaces, trees hedges and underground.

Its not all bad news. Wasps never use the same nest each year, so if you can cope with them during the spring and summer months then you can be sure that they will not return the following year. This way you can wait until they leave and just knock the nest down and discard of it. You would also have the opportunity to examine the intricate work the wasps put into building the nest if you so wish. 

However if you are allergic to wasp stings, then nest is in a built up area or you have a young family the wasp nest may become a hazard and waiting for them to vacate themselves isn't an option. In this case wasp control is the only option.

Getting Rid Of A Wasp Nest
Of the two it is more likely that it is a social wasps nest causing problems meaning there will be a large number of wasps buzzing around. If you are unsure of what type of wasp you are dealing with then the best and safest option is to contact a pest control company as they are experienced in dealing with wasp nests. It is also not advised to try and deal with a wasp nest yourself if you have had a reaction to a wasp sting in the past. 

Precautions

• Wasps will attack when someone or something gets too close to their nest so be prepared.

Top Tips for Wasp Control

1. If the wasp nest is in a bush you should first observe the entry and exit pattern. Then standing around 15 feet from the nest, using a good quality powdered insecticide cover the entire nest paying close attention to the exit path of the wasps. 
2. Wasp nests that are on the ground are fairly simple to deal with just disperse the powdered insecticide into the tunnel then leave it. 
3. Eaves of the house are the most common place for wasp nests and they are quite tricky to get to. The best way to get to the nest is usually from the inside of the roof space. Try to keep the attic light off as this can attract the wasps. Use a torch to locate the wasp nest  then providing the nest is not too far away use a powdered insecticide. If this is too much of a big job then it is probably best to call in pest control to provide a professional wasp control service. 
4. Another common nesting place for wasps is air bricks as they are easy to destroy. The nest can go as deep as 6 feet under the house cavity. You should use a powdered insecticide making sure you cover all the holes, as the wasps will just use the holes without the insecticide in them. You will need to repeat this process a few time for it to take full affect. Again this type of nest requires special equipment and you may need to call in the help of pest control to ensure the wasp nest is properly dealt with. 
5. Wasp nests in roof voids or high up places require specialist equipment including a full protective suit so it is better to call in a professional pest control company.

Very happy customer

I have been dealing with this customer in Frome for a few weeks, but due to holidays, its taken this long to get Chris from Alpharod out to inspect the drains,  This is an old farmhouse with lots of draind and gullies etc.   Chris straight away found some old pitch pipes that had either collapsed, or were in the process of collapsing.   These were used extensively in the 1970's but alas were not really fit for purpose and are all coming to the end of their useful lives, so either need repairing or replacing.  the latter is my preferred option.

To the rear of the property, there were more problems, rats had gnawed through a poorly fitted plastic pipe and there was also an exposed gully where rats had gnawed through the drain cover.  fortunately, I know a fair amount about drains and fitted a stainless steel rat flap that has prevented rats from exiting the drains.  ALso the customer has arranged for Alpha Rod to fix the drains.  Another happy customer!

Will people please listen to my advise - sometimes!  One customer in Frome is convinced the rats are gaining entry via the roof, when I am sure there is a drain issue.  I would either get Wessex Water out to check drains or my trusted contractor CHris from Alpharod to inspect them.  I am convinced there is a drainage fault, as it happens, nothing is being done so the rats will be back!

Today, I revisited a cafe in Frome.  Wow the rats have been busy, taking nuts and pasta from the dry stores.  Fear not, Kapow Pest Control are on the case with a good few rat traps in position, we should control them soon.  To aid my investigation, Chris from Alpha Rod, is coming out on Friday to camera the drains as there is something dodgy going on!

Unlike some unscrupulous pest control businesses out there, Kapow Pest Control has not destroyed one honey or bumble bees nest this year, but given good sound advise.  It makes me no money but I sleep well at night!!

However, the wasps have arrived, carrying out wasp nest destruction at: Buckland Dingham, Frome, Heytesbury, Bruton and Bath so far.  More on this to follow.  2 nests have been in bird boxes so far, 2 wasps nests in the ground.  Many more wasps nest to follow this year we hope after last year! whats good for me is not so good for you. Sorry guys 

Rats, Rats, Rats, Beckington, Frome, Bath, Warminster. Max to the rescue

Never have I known to have so many rat jobs! Good for Myself and Max but lesser for the occupants!  Many of these rats are gaining access to properties via: building faults; drain faults; and even on rat bought in by a cat - Max made short work of that!  Just the other day a distraught customer called with a live rat in their utility room, after investigation, it became apparent the rat had entered via the tumble drier vent.  Max was convinced the rat was still there due to his fantastic nose!.  I blocked the vent from the outside, then pulled out the tumble drier - job done Max made light work of dispatching the large rat.  Another happy customer

Moles

Still mole jobs coming in.  Even though its been so dry moles still seem to be causing a nuisance.  Kapow pest Control are there to help, being experts in mole control

Wasps, Wasps and more wasps!

So far it seems like it will be a busy year for Kapow Pest Control.  Good numbers of wasps nests treated.  This year Kapow Pest Control is using Waspbane to help food premises free of wasps around food serveries.

Hornets a buzzin

So far it seems like there are more hornets than ever, been very busy treating them along with wasps, Bath, Mells and Frome areas

Catch the pigeon!

Yesterday I was called by a customer who believed he had a rodent or bird in the chimney breast in their bedroom.  Kapow Pest Control turned up promptly and quickly determined that it was a pigeon trapped on a ledge behind a fire brick.  After a little work with Stanley knife and screwdriver, the Victorian air vent was removed and pigeon retrieved and at the customers request, released out of the window where it flew off for a well earned drink and feed!  After all the bird had been there 3 days!  Kapow Pest control will now either fit a cowl to chimney pot to stop this reoccurring or get in a local trusted chimney sweep to perform this task.

Rat attack

Its that time of the year when our furry friends want to come and join us in the warm.  Over the last few weeks I have dealt with several internal rat infestations.  At kapow Pest Control we have the added benefit with the keen nosed Max the Jack helping to locate said rats or their locations.  If you hear noises in your loft, house or under your floor boards, We will endeavour to do our best to not only rid you of the pests but also try and establish just how the rodents gained entry, then either help you carry out proofing, give advise or recommend a very good local drainage company that can investigate and drainage faults.
